Mark Rowlands, SGLF, UK

Mark Rowlands

co-founder of the sussex gay liberation front

Welshman Mark moved to Brighton in 1968 for university. They were actively preparing to form a Sussex University group of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) but had encountered considerable nervousness and bureaucracy from national CHE. Impressed by the informality of the GLF and its lack of rules, along with co-founder with Simon Watney, Brighton GLF was officially formed in January 1971, with a later name change to Sussex GLF to reflect its wider geographical membership.

A move to London in the 1970s saw Mark involved in Gay Switchboard and Befriending Group before he returned to Sussex (Hurstpierpoint, then Rye) in 2006.

What does your identity mean to you?
