The IDENTITY Project

Shaulan, Brighton, UK

Shaulan Chanlewis

Shaulan grew up in a seemingly homogenous small town, moved to a big city, then a smaller one. Right now, she considers herself not young but not old. She is a parent through adoption but her children are grown up and has been with her partner for 26 years, civilly so for the last 12. She loves to dance in the kitchen waiting for the kettle, to the shocked expressions of their cats!

What does your identity mean to you?

Wanting to fit in, wanting to not fit in, knowing from a young age that I cannot be sure of how I am perceived. Daughter, sibling, partner, friend, parent, colleague, neighbour. Being me, inside here, looking out. A lover of stories, music and feeling myself move through our shared space.
